Is BioTech Bad?

What about Genetically Modified Organisms. Ooooh, that does sound scary, doesn't it?

Turns out they pretty much mean the same thing when it comes to food. And apparently that's a good thing.

DarkPalmer, a blogger I read from time to time posted a link to this video, "What's For Lunch?". In it, the interviewer challenges this notion that "Organic" means healthier. And also challenges the assertions that scientifically modified foods are bad for us.

One intereting quote:

"For us, Organic, Biotech, and Conventional are all management systems," says Jennie Schmidt, Farmer and Registered Dietician, Schmidt Farms. "And you use them in terms of balance and how it fits into your operation. And I'm comfortable with knowing that farmers are good stewards of what they're doing, and that therefore the food that is raised conventionally or through biotech is safe."

Environmental Movement – More Harm Than Good

Fellow conservative blogger Boss Dodger brings up some good points in his blog post today (http://bossdodger.wordpress.com/2008/06/24/environmentalists-need-to-sit-down-and-shut-up/) - or rather reiterates some good points - made by Ben Stein on the Glenn Beck show last night.

The primary point is that the environmental movement is causing more harm than good, and that any attempt to discuss the issue honestly is suppressed by the media. That the media in fact, demagogue anyone who speaks out against the negative impacts of global environmentalism.

A key point that Beck made was when he said that it is a popular misconception that people all over the world hate America because of our foreign policy. The more immediate cause, however, is when people are starving in Africa because they can’t afford rice – because housewives in the United States are pumping ethanol into their fuel tanks instead of gasoline.
I would, however take Boss Dodger’s point one step further. I think that the environmental movement has gotten its great reception in the media because this is their last-ditch effort to cash in on a controversy. I mean both the media as well as the “warmers”.

Neither probably cares much whether the earth warms up. The fact that people are dying because of high grain prices, or the lack of fuel is irrelevant to them.

Their prime motive is to bring money into their organizations, and global warming is a cause that seems to have legs.

Wait, I know I can hear the rumble already. You think that environmental organizations don’t care about money. Wrong!

They are businesses just like any other business. They exist to propagate themselves, make money and develop influence. Just like oil companies, just like Churches, and just like the New York Times. At heart, they are all in it to make money.

Is Reality Too Boring?

Check out The Onion (http://www.theonion.com/). This satirical, left-leaning site features fake news and commentary that’s so out of bounds, you’d swear it was real.

Be sure to check out their fake coverage of the U.S. Presidential Elections called “War for the White House” here: http://www.theonion.com/content/whitehousewar. This is some great stuff!
